Titus: A Portrait of Resilience
This over-the-shoulder portrait of the legendary silverback Titus was captured in 1994 by Ian Redmond OBE, Chairman of the Ape Alliance. Taken shortly after the genocide in Rwanda, the photograph marks a pivotal moment in conservation history. Ian had joined a BBC film crew to help restart research efforts, bringing Rwandan colleagues back from refugee camps to track the gorilla groups and see if they had survived the civil war. While the gorillas were found safe, the mission was heavy with the knowledge that many human friends and colleagues had suffered tragic losses. This is one of Ian’s favorite photographs, and we have turned it into a sketch with his kind permission to support continued conservation work.
